procedure, etc.) prepared by the contractor or obtained from a vendor to support fabrication and
manufacture of the production item shall be made available, upon request, for inspection by the
contracting officer or his designated representative.
3.2 Materials. Material shall be as specified herein and as shown on the applicable drawings.
3.3 Weight. The weight of finished hammer shall be 1,800 pounds for Size 1 and 3,000
pounds for Size 2, plus or minus 10 percent.
3.4 Plug. The plug shall be free from checks and knots. The grain in the wood shall be
paralleled to the length of the plug.
3.5 Rope sling. The rope sling shall be 2-1/4 inch nominal circumference manila rope with a
breaking strength of 5,400 pounds or 2-3/4 inch nominal circumference sisal rope with
breaking strength of 6,160 pounds, conforming to T-R-605. The rope shall be threaded through
the holes of the pile cap and the rope ends shall be spliced to form a loop on each side of the cap.
The loops shall be used as a sling over the hooks provided on the sides of the hammer.
3.6 Identification marking. The hammer shall be identified, in accordance with
MIL-STD-130. The weight of the finished hammer shall be stenciled on the side of the hammer
in such a manner as to be discernible. Stenciling shall conform to MIL-T-704.
3.7 Treatment and painting. The hammer and all components except the guide grooves and
the rope sling shall be cleaned, treated, and painted in accordance with MIL-T-704, Type A, color
as specified (see 6.2).
3.8 Workmanship. All parts and components which include castings and forgings shall be
clean of harmful extraneous material such as sand, dirt, sprues, and flux. Rework shall be limited
to procedures which do not reduce mechanical properties or affect function. Holes shall have the
burrs removed.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1 Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract, the contractor is
responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as
otherwise specified in the contract, the contractor may use his own or any other facilities suitable
