mudguard portion of the fender shall be rigidly mounted, shall extend the full width of the tires,
and shall extend downward to at least the centerline elevation of the tires. The front mudguard
portion of the fender shall be formed by connecting the fender to the vertical sheet steel
furnished on the truck chassis and located just to the rear of the fuel tanks. The fenders shall
cover the width of the tires.
3.8 Hydrostatic transmission. The bituminous pump shall be driven by a hydrostatic
transmission. The power take-off (PTO) control shall be located to be engaged or disengaged by
the operator in the truck cab. The control that varies the speed of the hydrostatic transmission
shall be located in the truck cab with override controls provided at the rear platform. The control
shall be labeled according to function (PTO, PUMP RATE) and to indicate the functional result
of control movements (ON, OFF). Valve controls shall be provided with double-ended arrows
showing the direction of operations and labeled at each end to indicate the functional result
(open and close).
3.9 Heating system. The heating system shall consist of two U-tube type heating flues and
two low-pressure, air-atomizing burners, fuel pump, fuel tank with a capacity of not less than
20 gallons (76 L), and blower. Each burner shall have a rating of not less than 500,000 Btu/hr
(146535.55 W) and shall be capable of operating on standard army diesel fuel in accordance with
VV-F-800 and MIL-T-83133. The burner system fuel pump shall be connected to the power
source so that it will operate only when the blower is operating. The blower operation shall be
independent of the bituminous pump.
3.9.1 Portable burner. A portable generating-type burner that burns no. 2 grade diesel fuel
shall be furnished. The burner shall be used for heating the pump or the tank-car connections.
The burner shall have a fuel-tank capacity of not less than 4 gallons (15 L). The tank shall be
marked: "FILL WITH DIESEL FUEL ONLY". Provisions shall be made for carrying the
burner on the distributor.
3.10 Spraying system. The spraying system shall include a positive-displacement,
rotary-type bituminous pump having a capacity of not less than 375 gallons (1420 L) per minute.
The pump shall be equipped with a bypass or other means to prevent damage to the lines when
the discharge is closed. The pump drive-shaft coupling shall be secured with a connection that
will protect against damage to the pump or transmission. The pump system shall be provided
with a dial-type pump meter which reads in gallons per minute. The bituminous pump, in
conjunction with the PTO hydrostatic transmission (see 3.8), shall provide bitumen to the spray
bar that will produce application rates from 0.1 gal/sq yd (.38 L/.84 sq m) to not less than
1.0 gal/sq yd (3.78 L/.84 sq m) through the 24-foot (7.32 m) spraybar. The actual rate of
application shall be within 10 percent of the intended rate. The spraybar shall be of the full
circulating type and shall consist of a center section approximately 8 feet in length plus turnup
type extension ends. Each spray bottle shall be capable of independent operation or
simultaneous operation with all nozzles. Remote type controls shall be provided in the truck cab
and at the rear operator's platform to (a) turn bitumen flow from the spraybar on or off, (b) shift
spraybar laterally, and (c) vertically raise or turn the spraybar as applicable. The controls shall
be labeled according to function ASPHALT FLOW, SPRAY BAR POSITION) and to indicate
