MIL-P-29196B(YD)
necessary to insure interchangeability of component parts, assemblies,
accessories, and spare parts.
*3.6 Materials. Materials used shall be free from defects which would
adversely affect the performance or maintainability of individual components
or of the overall assembly. Materials not specified herein shall be of the
same quality used for the intended purpose in commercial practice. Unless
otherwise specified herein, all equipment, material, and articles incorporated
in the work covered by this specification are to be new and fabricated using
materials produced from recovered materials to the maximum extent possible
without jeopardizing the intended use. the term "recovered materials" means
materials which have been collected or recovered from solid waste and
reprocessed to become a source of raw materials, as opposed to virgin raw
materials. Unless otherwise specified, none of the above shall be interpreted
to mean that the use of used or rebuilt products are allowed under this
specification.
3.7 Safety. All parts subject to high operational temperatures that are of
such a nature or are so located as to be or become a hazard to the safety of the
operating personnel shall be insulated, enclosed, or fully guarded to the extent
necessary to eliminate the hazard. The paver shall comply with applicable OSHA
regulations in effect at time of manufacture.
* 3.8 Performance. The paver shall receive from dump trucks paving material
mixed with bituminous concrete, and shall lay and finish the material to form
a strip of pavement. The bituminious strip shall be laterally and
longitudinally smooth within a tolerance of ±1/8 inch measured with a 12-foot
straight edge. The paver shall have, as a minimum, a paving width range of
4 1/2 feet up to 9 feet and shall be expendable to a laying width of 12 feet
by hydraulically telescoping the screed wings. While the receiving hopper is
being filled with paving material, the paver shall have the capability to
simultaneously push a fully-loaded 5-ton dump truck and to lay a pavement strip
12 feet wide. The paver shall meet all requirements specified herein while
operating on level ground.
3.9 Traction drives. The traction drives shall be powered by separately
controlled independent hydraulic motors. The traction drives shall propel the
paver forward and rearward from zero to not less than 120 feet per minute (fpm).
When specified (see 6.2), a traction drive speed increaser for traveling up to
180 fpm shall be provided. The traction drives shall provide a zero degree
turning radius and shall be capable of rotating the paver about its center
point, in both directions.
3.10 Mountings.
3.10.1 Type I, rubber tire-mounted. The type I paver shall be mounted on
10 or 12 soft solid traction tires suitable for paver operations.
3.10.2
Type II, crawler track-mounted. The type II paver shall be
mounted on full crawlers with self-cleaning type treads not less than
14 inches wide. Total ground contact shall be not less than 780 inches.
Crawler takeup adjustment provisions shall be furnished.
