3.5 Interchangeability. All units of the same classification furnished
with similar options under a specific contract shall be identical to the
extent necessary to insure interchangeability of component parts, assemblies,
accessories, and spare parts.
3.6 Safety. All rotating or reciprocating parts, and all parts subject to
high operational temperatures, that are of such a nature or so located as to
be or become a hazard to the operating personnel, shall be insulated,
enclosed, or guarded. to the extent necessary to eliminate the hazard. The
roller shall comply with OSHA regulations in effect at time of manufacture. The
roller shall be equipped with a horn, distinguishable from the surrounding
noise level, operable from the operator's station.
3.7 Weight. The roller shall have a shipping (metal) weight of not less
than 8,000 pounds. The operating weight of the roller, when filled with water
ballast, shall be not less than 10,000 pounds.
* 3.8 Dimensions. The roller shall conform to the dimensional requirements
specified in Table I.

* 3.9 Performance. The fully ballasted roller shall have a maximum
operating speed of not less than 5 miles per hour in both forward and reverse
directions while traveling up or down a 7 percent grade at any elevation from
sea level to 5,000 feet above sea level. The roller shall be capable of
compacting hot and cold mixed asphaltic concrete to a smooth compacted
surface. The roller shall be required to compact fine and coarse grained soil
as classified in accordance with ASTM D2487 to a density of 90 percent
standard proctor as determined in accordance with ASTM D1557. The roller
shall withstand the strains imposed upon it without any damage or deformation
when operating at maximum speeds and as specified herein.
3.10 Body and Frame. The body and frame shall be fabricated of structural
steel sections or steel plates with members joined, using one of the
arc-welding processes. In order to withstand the stresses imposed, and to
prevent permanent deformation or damage to the roller, the frame shall be
braced and reinforced wherever necessary.
