* 3.11 Engine. The engine furnished shall be of the diesel type having
horsepower, torque, and speed characteristics to meet satisfactorily all the
roller performance requirements specified herein. The engine shall be capable
of meeting the performance requirements using diesel fuel conforming to
W-F-800. The diesel engine shall start within 5 minutes and be ready for
full load operation within 15 minutes in any ambient temperature from +125
degrees F to -20 degrees F. Glow plugs or fluid priming system shall be
provided. When a fluid priming system is furnished, it shall be of the measured
shot type with a storage capacity of at least 12 fluid ounces. The engine
shall be furnished complete with at least the following accessories:
a.
An instrument panel complete with a lubricating oil pressure gage, a
fuel level gage, a cooling liquid-temperature indicator, a battery charge
and discharge rate indicator, and an hour meter.
b.
A fuel tank with sufficient capacity for 8 hours normal operation.
c.
A 12-volt or 24-volt electric cranking system.
d.
Battery(s).
A charging alternator wish a capacity rating compatible to the system.
e.
A cooling-liquid high temperature safety warning device.
f.
A lubricating oil low pressure safety warning device.
g.
h.
An engine housing so designed as to facilitate the maintenance of the
engine.
3.12 Hydrostatic Drive. The roller shall have a high pressure hydraulic
system to transmit power smoothly to the drive roll. Direction of travel
shall be controlled by the use of a single lever. Neutral position of the
forward/reverse lever shall be identified by a detent position. Movement of
the roller shall be in the same direction as the movement of the
forward\reverse lever.
* 3.13 Roller Drums. Roller drums shall be fabricated of steel plates with
seams and. heads joined using one of the arc-welding processes. Roller drum
surfaces shall be smooth. The roller drums shall be watertight and have
provisions for filling and draining water ballast. The roller drums shall be
equipped with heavy-duty axles and anti-friction bearings with seals to prevent
entry of water and dirt.
* 3.14 Scrapers. Roller drums shall have scrapers, located in the front and
rear of each roller drum. All scrapers shall extend across the full width of
each roller drum, and shall be capable of preventing the accumulation of
material on the roller drums when the roller drum operates in either the
forward or reverse direction.
* 3.15 Sprinkler system. Roller shall be equipped with a self-contained
sprinkler system for wetting and cleaning of the rolls. Sprinkler system shall
consist essentially of a water tank, lines, cocoa mats, spray headers, and
valves. Tanks shall have a capacity of not less than 100 gallons, a filler
opening with cap having a diameter of not less than 1-1/2 inches, and a
petcock for draining. Piping shall be rigidly affixed to the frame; flexible
lines shall be supported at 2-foot intervals or less. Cocoa mats and spray
headers shall be furnished on each roll and shall extend across the full width
of each roll and shall completely wet the surface of the rolls. Individual
regulating valves, located within easy reach of the operator, shall be
